Many of our patients tell us that to stay hydrated during the summer months, they have stopped drinking sodas and have switched to sports drinks and vitamin-containing energy drinks to replenish their bodies during the warmer summer months. They feel that these drinks are a better alternative to sodas – actually, sports and energy drinks can be highly damaging to your teeth! In fact, they are so destructive to tooth enamel that reports about their effect have been aired on ABC news! A nice alternative to sports drinks or even water (our most recommended beverage) is coconut water. It has a low acid content, is low in calories and sugars and is quite easily used by the body. It even has similar electrolyte contents to some sports drinks, has more potassium than a banana and is rich in fiber. The taste is mild and slightly sweet. For more tips and information on how diet can affect the health of your teeth or to have your teeth checked out because you have been drinking a lot of those energy or sports drinks, give us a call. We are here to help Garden City dental patients stay healthy and smiling all summer long.
