More Than Just Toothpaste

Keeping Garden City’s Smiles Whole and Healthy with Professional Dental Cleanings

Toothpaste – an everyday staple easy to take for granted. But this often-overlooked invention is – along with your regular dental cleanings – a great way to help keep both your mouth and your body healthier and stronger. It works along with your toothbrush to clear away bacteria and keep your teeth bright and fresh. As an added plus, the mintiness of toothpaste will freshen your breath while the slight abrasive quality will help clear away stains. We always recommend using toothpaste with fluoride, but it is important not to use too much toothpaste. If too much toothpaste is consumed, especially early in a child’s life, it can cause flourosis, or that mottled, whitish staining you sometimes see on people’s teeth. This is really difficult to get rid of, and although it is only cosmetic, it can affect confidence. Finally, remember that your tooth brushing technique is even more important that the toothpaste you use – keep your toothbrush tilted at a 45 degree angle to your gums and work on sections of your mouth at a time, making sure you brush carefully and thoroughly along the gum line. Once you are finished, don’t forget to floss! In a three minute stretch, you have done as much for your health as getting your rest, eating right, exercising! And don’t forget, no matter how well you brush your teeth, there is no replacement for your regular dental hygiene visits.
